Hello to everyone at MTM,
I came across MTM whilst browsing the web, and i love the idea of the 100 Days Challenge.
I am from England in the United Kingdom.
The reason i’m looking at the 100 Days Challenge and MTM, is the simple fact i turn 40 this year.
Most of my life i have been very fit and healthy, but a few years ago after some problems i just stopped exercising altogether....
Not quite sure when it happened it just seem to happen, and starting again is more difficult than i could have ever imagined (always thought i could just start again whenever i wanted, easy..... yeah.... No)
I weigh 174lbs and would love to get down to 150lbs before i am 40 (June this year, so although i dont think thats possible but i am gonna make a start on it).
The second thing i want to do is loose the belly (tone it up a bit) and start running again.
i used to love running when i was younger (never set the world on fire, best time for a half marathon was 1hour 31mins).
Anyway thats a little about me,
Wish me luckl on my goal of reaching 150lbs
Cheers,
Kev

Kevin, welcome to motivation to move. It is good to see someone on this side of the atlantic - I’m from cork in Ireland. Can I recommend the couch to 5k program. It is designed to get people who may not have run in a while up to running 5km (or 3 miles). There is a great podcast as well that you can follow. You will get plenty of encouragement on the 100 day challenge so best of luck!

Welcome Kev,

Yeah, I was in about the same place you are .... just a little bit older than you..... (I’m 52)

When I turned 50 in 2005, we also celebrated our 25th wedding anniversary.  I had saved up to take my ‘bride’ on many trips, ate with no thought of the consequences.  Over the years in my current job, I had become very seditary, and exercise was walking upstairs.

After Christmas of my 50th year, i looked at some pictures of myself taking at the family get together.  I did not reconize the man with his beautiful wife, who at 5.7” weighed in at almost 210 lbs, and vowed to start working out.  It was a ‘click’ moment for me, and I joined a gym.

Three days later, my father of 91 passed away and 2 weeks after that I lost my job to a downsizing at work (first time in my life being unemployed).

When you don’t have to spend 50 hours at work, you have more time to work out.....I cruised the net and found MTM, and used the motivation from Scott, and the MTM community to keep going.

For losing weight, for me, it was all about calorie intake.  Sure, i exercised, and that helped keep my metabolism going, but I really noticed that if I stayed at 1800 calories, the lbs just shed off.

In the middle of the year of 2006 i played racquetball with a friend (I had shed about 50 lbs since) and we played until he complained about his knee.  I had just watched him do a triathlon a week earlier (while watching, I told him and myself i could NEVER do). He went to the doctor, and had to have surgery on his knee.  I told him, that in his honor, since I felt responsible to hurting his knee while playing racquetball, I would do the Carlsbad Triathlon (a shorter sprint distance) in his stead.

Well, I started to run at the gym, and swim about once a week.  I had a mountain bike (more of a cruiser) and started to ride it about a mile or so.  My friends son had an old Cannondale road bike, so we retrofitted it to fit me (it was WAY to small), and I started to ride with clipless pedals (fell a few times at first, but kept up).  I did my first mini Triathlon in December 06, and was hooked......

I like you did not know if I would ever be active again.  Needless to say, its a part of my lifestyle now, working out 6-7 days a week, and scheduled to do a half ironman in March.

Good luck on your journey, whereever it may take you.....with MTM and your drive, you will reach your goals!

I track my food everyday (http://www.fitday.com) to this day.

It’s important to know that at the end of the day it’s not the medals you remember.  What you remember is the process-- what you learn about yourself by challenging yourself, the experiences you share with other people, the honesty the training demands—those are things nobody can take away from you whether you finish last or you’re an Olympic Champion.

To tri is to risk failure, not to tri is to guarantee it!

Welcome, Kevin! I think your half marathon time is spectacular, I’m in awe.

The couch to 5k program (look for a podcast titled “podcast for running” by Robert Ullrey) is wonderful, that’s how I got started running.

I look forward to your 100 days thread!

Best of luck to you, Kevin!  I’m almost disappointed you didn’t express your weight in ‘stone.’ After watching enough BBC export programmes I can convert that in my head!

It’s great that you have specific goals from the start. As long as 150lbs isn’t too little for your height and body type, I think your goals are quite achievable. If it takes a bit longer than June, you’ll still feel better by then and have plenty to celebrate.

Peace and joy,

Ann

There are loads of us here on this side of the Atlantic.

It’s just that, being British, we just don’t pop up very often.

We’re far too reserved to toot our horns.

Good luck with the 150lbs target.

That sounds quite light to me, how tall are you?

Once you get really on board with Scott you may find that weight becomes secondary to total body fat and general fitness but it’s all good.

I’m much the same weight as you but at 6ft that’s as light as I’ve been in years.  And, like Tom, I’m 50.

Good luck and remember if you come to a hurdle or a plateau get right back here quick.  There will always be someone here to help.

Hey there Kevin,

welcome!  tongue rolleye

I’m not from the UK but I’m from your neighbor country, (Paris) France tongue wink ...actually originally Greek...lol but anayway, it’s so good to see they are a bunch of European MTMers!

I can understand where you’re coming from; going from super fit to unfit is the worst because you know already how good you have been. I’ve experienced a little bit of the same situation. I was a dedicated dancer. One day I got injured and my world tumbled down.
But the good news is you can always climb back up! YOU can! The body is an amazing adapting machine: “impossible is nothing”

Go On!  wink

Hi Kevin

Welcome to MTM.

Sorry I’m a bit late - but better late than never!!

I’m in the UK.  Stevenage to be specific.  Whereabouts are you?

Good luck with your birthday Goal.  I hope you get as close to your goal as possible in time for your birthday, although the amazing thing I have found is that once you have started, it doesn’t really matter how long it takes, as long as you know that each day you are getting closer.
