Well said, Eileen! What’s your favorite chocolate treat?

Eileen, I’m with you.  The best part is that your philosophy works with any treat, not just chocolate.  There are days where I’m gonna have a cheesecake, and you better believe it’s high quality and amazing.  And I enjoy every minute of it.

On the other hand, I could probably never have another chocolate Easter egg in my life and feel perfectly content.  That stuff is so low-quality that I don’t miss it at all.

Bree, I know you asked Eileen, but it’s too good a question to pass up!  My favourite chocolate treats are:
- hot chocolate (there’s a place here in Montreal that does *real* hot chocolate… none of this powdered mix!)
- chocolate fondue
- ferrerro rochers (SO tasty!)

Cheers,
Julie

Thanks, Julie! I’m so gonna try the ferrerro rochers now. I’ve seen them, and passed by only to grab the crap. I’ve never had real hot chocolate or the chocolate fondue downer , someday I will.

I really like the dove dark chocolate. But I’m not sure that it’s the best. Hubby brought home some amazing stuff from Amsterdam, if I can find it I’ll let y’all know what it was.

Most of the time I just like plain chocolate (milk or dark) - Hershey’s kiss, Dove square, etc.  That way I can savor the chocolate with out anything else getting in the way.

Sometimes I need something more caky (is that a word?) so I buy the 25 cent package of Little Debbie’s Swiss Roll.

the idea of going out especially to get it, then getting the really good (and good for you) chocolate, then savoring it is excellent. What I find is that while I’m a complete chocoholic I don’t often crave just plain chocolate, I’ll want a chocolate chip cookie or a piece of chocolate cake. When you make these yourself you know whats in them and you can tinker with the recipie a bit, substitute splenda for sugar or some applesauce for butter ect. allrecipies.com lets you adjust the recipie for the number of servings. So if you want a baked good you can search for ingredients you want or don’t want and then cook up just enough for you, without the evil leftovers!

Hi Felixfelicis!

Welcome to the forums. It’s definitely true that if you make your treats yourself, you can cut out a lot of the bad stuff. For me personally, though, I’d hate to have the rest of the cake around if all I were craving was one slice. I know from long and hard experience that the rest of the cake isn’t going to stay on the counter my longer… it’s going right into my stomach! *grin*

For me, the solution is to go out and buy an individual slice or an individual (high-quality) cookie. True, there might be more calories than a slice or a cookie I’ve made myself. On the other hand, there’s probably much less calories than a whole cake or a whole batch of cookies, no matter how good I’ve been making it!

If making it yourself works for you, that’s fantastic! Especially if you can find a way to do it without the “evil leftovers.” (That’s always been my problem.) Everyone has their own way of dealing with issues. So… good job for finding yours!

Cheers,
JUlie

I agree! thats the beauty of allrecipies, they will adjust the recipie for you so that it will only make one cookie, only one serving of whatever it is that you want. thats it!

Very cool, then. I might have to go check them out.

(Though it seems a bit silly to be making a big batch of one cookie. *grin*)

I’m really getting into the dark, extra cacao (spelling?) varieties. 72%, even tried an 80%, and loved it. One square, and I’m experiencing intensity of the flavor your craving.

Girradelli (again, spelling!) makes extra dark chocolate chips even - so you can really moderate your calories and carbs, yet feel like you’re having more than just “one piece”.

They also make these extra dark peppermint squares with a high cacao count. A small bag will last you a long time… but I have found these hard to find. Makes holding on to them or holding out for them all the more sweet.

Yum! enjoy!

I’m a fan of 70-75% cocoa chocolate.

Though once, my mom was trying to make me feel better and knew I liked dark chocolate. So she bought me dark chocolate. 99% dark chocolate.

I can’t eat it. It tastes *so* bitter! She bought it for me last year, and I think I’ve still got it. I really should just throw it out.

So apparently somewhere between 75% and 99% is my limit. *grin*

Cheers,
Julie

I once went to Switzerland and came home with 63 pounds of some of the world’s most rich, smooth and creamy chocolate in my suitcase ... although I didn’t personally make it, the 2 or 3 pounds worth that I ate were amazing.

I have to agree as a chocolate junkie (the word is about right for my addiction)

- Go for Quality but savor it. I noticed sometime I gobble without tasting it. You get more conscious of the value of the chocolate if you paid a lot for it.

- Brush your teeth, quite efficient too worked a couple of times for me.

- Do exercise. If you can do some physical exercise push up, set up, jumping jack. The effort will make the craving go away.

- Take one and make it melt in your mouth without swallowing for the longest time possible. After 1-2 minute sometime the body is satisfied.

- hot chocolate (there’s a place here in Montreal that does *real* hot chocolate… none of this powdered mix!)

I live in Montreal where is that place ? smile
