Hello all

I’m joined the group a few months ago, quit and now im back.

Question, when working out in the morning, which i did last week, what do you guys think about not having breakfast first.  I woke up one morning at 6, started workout at 7 finished at 8 but felt i had not enough energy to push myself very far on weights.

I realize that if i dont eat my body will be forced to burn fat, but if i dont have energy the intensity suffers.  Please let me know what you thinnk

By the way, i’m 44 yrs old, 5’11” 187lbs and want to get back to 175-180

Hi and welcome back!  I don’t know if there is one right answer about eating before working out.  I believe that Scott recommends a really small snack like a power bar or almonds before working out if you really don’t have the energy to complete the workout.

Like you, I am trying to lose those last ten pounds or so.  For me it is going slowly, but surely.  I think that MTM really helps.

Hi,

If I remember correctly Scott sometimes eats a banana before he leaves for the gym.  I think if you do your workout in the first hour after getting up you may not need to eat but if you are doing later than an hour you should have something.  Since you already feel it, you probably should eat something small.

You could also have a protein bar as you start your weights or half way through your workout.  I don’t like to eat almonds before working out, my stomach does not feel right with them.

Welcome back, RSmith! If the workout I’m planning will be strenuous I eat at least something. A yogurt smoothie 30 minutes before my workout is about perfect.

Let us know what you find out!

Welcome back!

I’m like you.  Sometimes when I wake up I need to have something to eat before working out.  Depending on how hungry I am, I’ll eat a piece of fruit or a slice of toast with about a tablespoon of peanut butter on it.

I wouldn’t worry about it.  I think a big part of long term success is figuring out what works for you and your body and then running with it!  grin

I’m glad you’re back!

Since I do 20-30 minutes of weight work and then 60 minutes of cardio, I can’t make it very well first thing in the morning without breakfast, but I surely don’t eat a full breakfast either. I either grab a banana or an energy bar. I can really tell the difference.

Working out...and eating before…

it’s your fuel

it’s what you need to feed your workout!

nothing heavy

but fuel

protien

some carbs

a little fat

THAT’S ALL

about a half hour to an hour before your workout
Depending on your workout, your intensity and the duration of your workout

Your body needs fuel....carbs are the most readily available to the body....the longer you workout, the more you need fat and protein to kick in......keep replenishing as you work out...over an hour....keep on adding carbs.....sugars...caffine is good too!....but as you continue.....as some fat.....depends on your intensity....but the most important is carbs as you keep buring them in exercise......

have fun most of all!!!

Welcome back to working out and MTM!! This is a great forum that I know you will enjoy and like.  From what you are saying I would think you need a small amount of either carbs or protein.  You will have to experiment with this one to see what works best for you.  Sometimes I will have a small serving of grapes or half of a banana.  Other times half of a high protein bar before workout and the other half after workout will get me through.  Try fruit one morning and see how it works.  Then try a protein bar the other morning and see what works best for you.

Nothing but coffee for me. It’s not rare for me to get up at 4AM and start a 20 mile run at 5AM with nothing in the tank but a couple cups of joe. I drink Gatorade along the way but don’t eat until after I’m finished. I just don’t have an appetite first thing in the morning. I’ve tried to eat before a workout but it just doesn’t seem to really get me going. Maybe your running out of energy due to plain old muscle fatigue.

Thanks for all your feedback people.  I appreciate it.  Ive decided to hire a trainer, experiment with amount of food, if any i eat in the morning.  Hopefully, it’ll come togehter soon.
