I’m a frequent grocery store shopper. I’m there at least 3-4 times a week. I enjoy my fruits/vegetables & I like them to be fresh. Hence the frequent visits… When I’m there, I try to stay away from the overly processed foods (frozen dinners) & buy mostly from the produce, dairy, deli, and canned goods…
Lately I’ve been doing a bit of thinking… eventhough I’m there often, I usually buy the same things day after day, week after week… is anyone else thinking the same?
Any suggestions on how I can break out of this rut?
skteacher what’s wrong with buying the same things each week? You can make different recipes with the same kinds of produce!
Well if you really want to break out of this, it may be because you are afraid to try new things. Lots of us are afraid to try new things in fear that things will not work out and it would just be a waste of money and energy in the end. But trying new things is the key to having fun and variety in life! So live a little, skteacher! Enjoy all the weird and quirky foods out there!
PS. my mom just bought some zucchinis from the farmers market that look like starfruits and egg plants that are in the shape of a ball! How cool is that! Trying new things is exciting!
It’s okay to buy the same things every week - As long as it’s the good things! Scott even advocates limiting your meal selection - it reduces the chances of straying into “bad” things. I think you’re doing just fine!

The problem isn’t the things I buy from the grocery store. The thing is, I live alone and lately I’m finding that I’m eating out more often then not. Like I’ll either go out, stop at the deli department and/or grab take out… etc. I may be just that I’m getting bored with the same old, same old? And yet I reach for it each time I’m at the grocery store… it never fails. It’s like automatic… weird really. I like what Christina said - that I should venture and try new foods… only problem with that is that most recipes says that it serves 4 or 6 people… how do you alter a new recipe to suit just me?
There is also preparing and freezing the stuff after it’s cooked,also save a lot of time!
The only thing that I freeze is left-over chilli… I’ve tried other stuff but it almost always gets freezer burn, then garbaged… I can’t really distinguish between what’s freezable and what’s not yet…
Skteacher, I love to cook and I really enjoy those products and use them all the time, 78% of my meals are pre-made by me, it saves time and makes life easy.
Glad press and seal is my lifesaver! It’s so fun to use! Now they have a ziploc steaming bag so if I’m lazy and I don’t feel like steaming my veggies I can just pop them into the bag and microwave to perfect (ok, not perfect) steamed veggies!
But you lose all the nutrients. Well maybe I’m wrong. I’m usually wrong on stuff like that. I just thought that maybe those baggies would help preserve the nutrients. However most of the time I steam vegetables properly. I try.
Our grocery list is basically the same every week. I don’t think you are abnormal. When it comes to produce, “fresh” can mean alot of things. I like to buy my produce “in season”. If you are buying “fresh” strawberries or citris right now you can bet these fruits are several months old. They have been preserved under a nitrogen blanket. It’s very safe and without this process you wouldn’t be able to get “fresh” produce in the winter. Right now is a great time to get peaches, plums, pears and apricots.
Do you get pluots up there? Yum! They are my personal fav.
If you’re a good cook, why not just invite people over for dinner? That way, you get the benefits of home-cooked meals without the annoyance of eating alone (believe me, I know that annoyance all too well).
In terms of the “serves 4-6,” why not look for things that can be switched up when being made in leftover? For example: meatloaf can be put in sandwiches, cooked chicken can be put on top of salads, hamburgers can be chopped up to make tacos, etc. I’m sure that with a bit of thinking, you can have the same food two or three days in a row and still not get bored with it.
