Days 4 - 5

I’m getting pretty good at eating good at restaurants. We were out of town and I didn’t have any sugar! I almost did. After walking 6 hours today I was exhausted and needed quick energy and immediately thought of something sugary - ice cream to be precise. But fortunately, we were constantly lost at the Renaissance Festival and while looking for the ice cream place we passed by a soda place and I got a diet pepsi instead. Whew!  cool grin

Deb, you are still doing awesome. Glad to hear it.

I’m also still doing well without sugar. Went out with Hubby tonight and did well passing up dessert, just didn’t look at that part of the menu. Then we went to Target, had to drive 45 miles to get there, but I looooove Target, and I always get a candy bar at the checkout. I really missed that candy bar, but it’s ok. Then Hubby asked if I wanted a coffee from the Starbucks in the front of the store. I wanted the coffee, so I had a sugar free non fat vanilla cappaccino. I’ve never ordered it sugar free, or non fat before. But it was good!

I’ve been in the moutains for the last couple of days with no internet…

So here’s a recap of my days:

Day 2 - Aug 23 --> good day, no additional sugar however I did use some Ketchup (I think the 3rd ingredient is liquid sugar, does that count?)

Day 3 - Aug 24 --> another good day, no sugar.  We delivered the rhubarb/apple crisp to my BF’s parents’.  While everyone had some, I passed it up and had a glass of water.

Day 4 - Aug 25, Today --> today wasn’t so good.  It was my BF’s mom’s birthday party and her b-day cake was carrot & I love carrot cake… I tried passing it up but I wasn’t too successful.  I ended up accepting a small slice - it was good but I’m certain that the cake itself & the cream cheese had sugar in it.

Does this mean I’m out now?  Because I fumbled or do I just continue on and try my best to avoid sugar?

Yep, you’re doing great! This is a challenge because it’s hard. One slip is not bad at all. But I have to ask, was it good? If you’re gonna slip, it may as well be wonderful and worth it.

Keep going, girl, we’re here for ya!

Deb & Bree,
The carrot cake was tasty but wasn’t satisfying, there was a huge helping of “guilt” associated with each bite… I’m glad that one slip up isn’t the end of this challenge.

Today was a god day.  Day 5 - no sugar!

Day 6 - No Sugar - Hurray!! Sunday is usually my hardest day to eat healthy. Sunday is my rest day from exercise and when I don’t exercise, my thoughts seem to gravitate to food… grrr  So I’m particularly happy I ate well today

Day 7 - No sugar today; I think I’ve broken my habit. I didn’t think about sweets today. Nice.

One week with no sugar, and I messed up! I was the sitter for the preschool parent meeting tonight. There were around 20 kids, 2 of them were twins under the age of 1. I was the only adult, the meeting lasted just over an hour. (Changing one baby in the bathroom while watching 19 other kids is tricky - I had help from my 11 year old, and another teacher’s 9 year old.) Well, after the meeting Mouse, Skeeter and I got all the toys put away, and I told them they could have one of the cookies the parents had had in the meeting. Mouse was being shy, so I took her over to the table with the cookies, and without even thinking, ate one myself. It was yummy, so I grabbed another of a different kind, and 2 bites in, I remembered the challenge. I felt so bad, I was doing so good.

Well, guilty as can be, I handed the cookie to Mouse, laughed it off and went on with the night. I can’t believe how absent minded I can be, and added probably 400 calories to my day. This is why I need the challenge, I would have had that several times over by now.

The good news, as soon as I realized what I had done, I easily got rid of the nasty little thing. I have a sugar headache now too, I always used to get them, but wasn’t positive it was from that, now I am. It feels like someone is lightly squeezing the back of my neck where my spine meets my skull. It’s not painful, but it’s not comfortable either. Anyone else ever get these?

Great job, Deb! I’m so happy this is working for you! Do you feel better without sugar?

People are always saying they feel better when they give up sugar. Well, I can’t really notice a physical difference; I just notice that the cravings are gone, and that is a great mental/emotional relief.

But I do understand the mindless nibbling; that’s just how I got my squirt of cherry pepsi in with the diet pepsi - I just wasn’t thinking…

Constant Vigilance!!

Yep, constant vigilance is the key. I need to start telling myself I’m allergic to sugar, maybe that thought process will make the automatic response to stay away instead of go to. Not that I’ll never have any again, but I need to have much less, and only once in a while. I’m not craving it anymore, which is wonderful. Fighting that craving is hard. And since this is a choice, not something I have to do, it makes it so much better. In a week, I can then choose to have a cookie, but I don’t want it to be such a controlling thing, I want that choice, not to have to fight myself to resist. I hope that makes sense.

I’ve been pretty good with staying away from sugar...that is until yesterday. We had a birthday BBQ for our Son’s 2nd birthday and I did the cake & ice cream with everyone. Oooooops. Back in the saddle today, no sugar...Mortin doesn’t have any sugar , right? (Been eating those like peanuts this past week).

Day 6 - no sugar, yeah!

Btw, just so that you are all aware.  I may be away for a bit - tomorrow I’m going to be making a 9.5 hour drive back home to SK.  I won’t have internet connected right away at home - with the influx of university students in late Aug/Sept, I don’t know when I’ll be able to book a hook-up.  So I probably won’t be posting for a while - a week perhaps?  However I’ll be keeping with the no sugar challenge, listening to old MTM shows on my ipod and thinking of you all - thanks for all the support & I’ll talk to you all when I return.
