OK, I was allowing myself to eat a bit too much, and went from averaging 138 to averaging 143. Well, I have pulled that back in, and feel much better. The ridiculous part? I’ve gone from 143 to 142 to 144 and today I’m at 146! I did a double up Saturday, and the next day is when I gained 2 pounds. I do feel very swollen, especially in my hands. I understand the muscles swelling, but I’m not going crazy with new exercise, I haven’t run in 2 days, but I’m still going up in the scale. And Flo is no where around.

My plan is to keep going, I feel fine except for the swelling. I have been eating more pork lately, could this effect me in this way?

And what crazy things are you guys experiencing that seems so backwards?

Bree, I think you found out EXACTLY why I don’t weigh myself all too often!  As you know the best indicator is how you feel....perhaps your body is reacting to hormonal changes or bloating due to diet or even heat (if it is hot outside you most often become bloated).  Perhaps a good shake up in your workout routine is needed to push through this phase, perhaps doing intervals, using different weight weights than what you are used to, drinking more water...I was at a plateau and decided to switch up my workout routine and clean up my diet and I have lost 3 pounds...it does work, just takes a bit more determination and thought.

Good luck!!!  Looks like another challenge you have to push yourself through, you can do it!!!

That makes sense. It is very hot outside, and soooo humid. Yesterday I didn’t get near enough water until after 4pm. I had felt extremely drained until around 7. I’ll keep going, I’m not that easily stopped (way too stubborn), my pants still fit, my ring is tight, so I know I didn’t gain 4 pounds of fat since Saturday.

I’m also fairly sure that if I’m going through this, others are as well.

Thanks Julie! And I will stop weighing myself on the days I feel like a whale. It really does make put the day off on the wrong foot.

I’ll blame it on the heat too. My scale jumped up too, but that could also be flo related too. Hmmm...

So true. I am happy I’m not alone, but couldn’t we all have some other oddity happening. Let’s all win the lottery instead. I like that better.

Now wait a minute - I just bought the winning lottery ticket 35 minutes ago - There is no way you have it!

All kidding aside - I used to weigh myself daily - even twice or three times daily - and I just suceeded in driving myself insane!  I would obsess about the scale - now I just go by fit of clothes.

I now just get weighed at my annual docter’s visit - always a pleasant surprise.  For some reason I always expect to weigh more than I do.

As far as your weight fluctuations, as long as your being “more gooder than badder”, it will all straighten out.  The heat and humdity are just getting to you! tongue wink

And yes - It is RIDICULUS!

Bree

This is a lesson in accepting the numbers on the scale for what they are, numbers.  All sorts of things are involved in your overall weight, from time of month (phase of the moon) last night’s salty dinner, the extra glass of wine, other body functions, hydration, etc.  rolleyes  It’s the trends that are important and if you really see a trend towards a gradual increase it may be time to cut back a little on the food and increase the exercise just a little.  Don’t PANIC!!!!!  big surprise  Just see where you are, identify what’s really happening and deal with it.  No drama.  cool smile

I know, I’m not panicking (not completely) oh oh , it was just frustrating to start counting calories and running, then have the scale go up! But this morning it has gone back down 2 pounds, so I’ll keep just drinking as much water as I can. Yesterday’s water tally was 11 cups. Blasted heat.

Boy can I relate to your frustration.  I’ve been there so many times.  In the past I let it derail me.

Some of you mentioned not weighing everyday, which is cool.  I find that I gain if I don’t weigh myself.  However...big however!!...I no longer keep track of what I weigh.  I used to write it down on my bedroom calendar every morning.  It was too much!  Now, I weigh myself as a reminder that it matters what I weigh and how I care for myself.  Nothing more.  If I skip for more than a few days I seem to eat “more badder than gooder”.  So for me, the weighing works.

Don’t let the number rule your day.  You are so much more than a number on a little machine.  Besides, maybe your SMSM fairy had her foot on the scale wink

I’ve noticed that when I run a race (like a 5k/10k race) I will gain about 2 pounds, despite not doing anything different with my diet & exercise routine.  These two pounds usually go away within a week.

I have a tanita BC-533 scale that measures various things including muscle mass, I weigh myself twice a day (morning & evening) and after exercise and I keep this information in a logbook.  It helps me not go crazy over watching my weight because I can see the long term patterns.

Usually after a race I notice an increase in muscle mass correlating with the increase in weight, unfortunately that muscle mass increase goes away with the weight within a week.  I am assuming this is due to an increase in the use of muscle fibers which signals your body to send more nutrients to the muscles to power them which makes the muscle temporarily weigh more, similarly to when you are more hydrated your muscle mass weighs more.

So perhaps your body is doing something similar to mine, and will “normalize” within a few days.

Although I would rather keep the 2 pounds of muscle mass smile

Hope this helps!

I’ll jump in a bit late on this one, since I’m still catching up on my post-vacation MTM reading.

Bree, I notice similar things on my scale.  I weight myself every day or two, and the numbers do jump around.  For me, it’s within about a 3-pound range (currently 110-113).  So long as I’m in that range, I don’t mind.  For you, the range may be a big larger.

I’ve also found that it takes 2-3 days for anything to register on the scale.  If I do a huge cardio workout, I may still go up in weight the next day, but it’ll come down the day after.  If I eat like a pig, the weight gain likewise generally doesn’t show up for 2-3 days.  I think this may have something to do with calorie averaging.

A question for you: do you weight yourself at the same time every day?  I tend to weigh myself in the morning before I’ve eaten breakfast but after (how to say this politely?) using the potty.  That way, I have a fairly stable reading that’s not shifted by the food mass I’ve consumed.  If you change around the times you weigh yourself, that might also cause some of the jumpiness in the numbers.

And, like others have said, if it makes you crazy, *don’t do it*!  There are other ways to track yourself that don’t involve you going insane!  smile

Cheers,
Julie

I am very particular about the time I weigh myself. It’s as soon as I wake up and flush away as much as possible. I’m still not sure why my weight was all over, but I’ve been having lots of odd fluctuations lately. I’m assuming it will figure it all out and things will settle down. Or I’ll just continue to just fluctuate and wonder why. Either way it’s all good.

I know what you mean.  I’m fluctuating as much as 7 lbs right now.  I don’t know why ... I’m not going to let it get to me.

Hi Bree, I know this thread is old, old but had to put my two cents in.  Pork takes about 18 hours to digest - go google it.  Its also full of nitrites which are bad, bad.  I had an injured bird once and ran out of mince to feed it and only had pork in the fridge - I gave it a bit and it was dead within 4 hrs.  I havn’t eaten pork since.  Please research it for your self - they also spray some horrrific pesticides on pigs to keep them “parasite free” that all absorbs through piggy skin which is very similar to ours....  dont want to sound like a downer but its worth looking into.

Wow, I’d never heard all that before. Thanks! We’ve been eating less pork lately, no real reason, but now I’ll keep my eyes open for organic (if I can find any around here).
