Walking & Pedometer Recommendation

Hi All,

I’m new to the MTM thing so I thought I’d make my first posting one that I hope will help many of the MTM members and maybe even save you some money.

I’m kind of anal when it comes to a lot of things and exercising is one of my worst. Over the last year I have purchased and thrown away a couple of hundred dollars worth of useless pedometers. I’d buy them and play with them for a few days, sometimes wearing two or three of them hoping that by averaging them I might get an accurate measurement only to be disappointed.

They were all garbage. Whether I paid $10 or $40 for it they never gave me accurate results.

That was until I purchased an Omron HJ-720ITC. I’ve worn it almost every day for the last six weeks and it works. Now I won’t go so far as to say that it is accurate to the last step but what I can say is that it is repeatable. I walk on a circular path that is approximately 3/8th of a mile as part of my daily walk and the Omron tells me that it takes between 685 and 715 steps every time I make it around. There will always be some variation as the path is about five feet wide and I don’t stay on the same part of the path for a full circuit so some will take more steps and some fewer.

I want to know that if I am walking 10,000 steps a day on average, my current goal, that if I start walking 12,000 steps that I have increased my distance by 20%. The Omron does this day in and day out.

Anyway check out the Omron pedometers at Amazon. They have the best price that I was able to find. If your anal like me buy the HJ-720 with the PC software so that you can track your walking on your computer If you just want to know how many steps you are taking buy the HJ-112 without the computer interface. They are $33 and $20 respectively.

Below is a non affiliate link to the correct page at Amazon.

http://amazon.com/s/ref=nb_ss_b/002-4228490-5114436?initialSearch=1&url;=search-alias=aps&field;-keywords=omron

BTW, if you do buy one be sure that if you use the belt clip that you attach and use the supplied lanyard as the one weakness of the Omron is that the belt clip sucks. The pedometer easily pops out of the clip and is gone. Luckily, the Omron works just fine in your pants or shirt pocket. For women they claim that it will count your steps if its in your purse. Not having a purse I couldn’t verify this claim but it does work in your pocket as I always put it in my pocket.

Hi Gary,

That’s what I just bought!! I LOVE IT. I got the $32 one with the software. It’s awesome! I bought one for my boyfriend and for my best friend. They love it. I’m telling everyone about it, too. I’m so impressed with it.

You are right though about the clip. The belt clip is useless. The attachy thing on the lanyard is awesome.

Good job letting everyone know about this awesome product!

Hi all,

I just got the Nike + kit and a pair of new Nike shoes so my iPod is now my pedometer.  I did find that I had to make my SMSM programs into playlists so I could listen to them while using the iPod program that records my distance etc.  Check it it out at nike or another sports equipment website. It is only my first day with it.  I was disappointed when I couldn’t immediately use the SMSM to listen while using the attachemt.  There is a tablet that goes inside the left shoe and a little receiver that goes on the bottom of your iPod to make it all work.

I also have an OMRON with the computer software and I LOVE it.  I’ve been wearing mine for three months now and it tracks my walking very accurate.

Gary, not only can women carry it in thier purses, but they can tuck it in thier bras (I have no pockets on my workout pants and I’m not carrying my purse on the track).  I hate clipping things on my waist band of my pants.  For the outdoor person, the OMRON pedometer can also be placed in a backpack.

WalMart also sells and it’s cheaper then Amazon.com

I have the Omron HJ-720ITC with the software too. I love it.  I have been using it for a few months now and it is the most accurate pedometer that I have ever owned.  I have the Omron blood pressure machine that downloads into the software too.  It really helps me to see how my steps relate to my blood pressure and I was able to see how many steps I needed to do every day to keep my blood pressure in line.

Gary,
Thanks for the recommendation, I have been considering buying one so I can see how much I walk in a day at work.  I do a lot of walking, but most of that is intentional for the exercise, I could just use the phone and sit.  But instead I get up and walk around to the people I need to see, I think they like the personal attention they get when I come by.  Anyway thanks again this will really help me to save money and I appreciate that alot.

Has anybody heard about the Omron HJ-112??  This one appears to be a step below the one Gary recommended, but it appears to have some really good features on it.  Just curious.  This one doesn’t have the bells and whistles like the other one, but it is right in the price range that I would be willing to spend.  I am watching some ebay auctions on this and if I buy it I will do a review on this one and let you know how it works.  If anyone else has used this one please let me know what you think.  Thanks in advance for your help in this matter.

Hi Scooby,
I have used the HJ-112.  I had it before I stepped up to the 720ITC.  I liked it equally as well, but I wanted the software to track my progress.  There is a page at walker tracker with pedometer reviews that you might find helpful.  It also tells you how many people are using a certain pedometer.  Most of the people at WalkerTracker use the HJ-112 and love it.

I had the Omron HJ-112 first and then upgraded to the one with the software.  I’m a visual person and the graphs the software provides is very motivating.  I enter my goals in the software program and it show graphs on how my progress is progressing in reaching my goals.  I gave my HJ-112 to a co-worker who works at a lower paygrade to justify my extravagance.

A side note:  I was on vacation last week and went canoeing and the canoe tipped twice while I was wearing my pedometer.  It was not affected in the least bit so it’s pretty water resistant.  My cell phone, forgotten in my pocket, didn’t fare so well (although it did eventually dry out and is working again).

Cool thank you Ladybug and Christine for the postive endorsement for that pedometer.  I really appreciate that alot, very helpful.  I am going to buy one on ebay, just have to wait for the right price.
