I guess I have two uniforms, my gym/treadmill uniform and my biking uniforms.
The gym uniform is pretty simple, black Nike-Fit shorts with the cool iPod pocket, a cotton University of Hawaii t-shirt (have lots of those), a pair of my Nike+ shoes, my iPod Nano with the Nike+ attachment, and my Camelbak waterbottle.
I actually have three biking uniforms. For road rides it’s my Pearl Izumi ultrasensor shorts, Borah sleeveless jersey, Giro helmet, Sidi shoes, and PI gel gloves. For regular mountain biking it’s my Borah baggy shorts with liner, a Molokai Ranch freeride style jersey, Giro/Troy Lee Designs Zen helmet, Oakley Radar shoes, and Troy Lee Designs XC gloves. Then when I’m feeling completely reckless and go downhilling I start with the PI shorts and cover those with Fox motocross shorts. Then comes the Dianese jacket with spine protector and arm armor, I’ll cover that with a long sleeve Fox moto jersey. Depending if I’m running clips or flats I’ll wear the Oakley shoes or a pair of Airwalks. My legs will be protected with Fox 911 leg armor, and I’ll wear Fox sidewinder gloves. Then I top it all off with a 661 full face helmet.
Lots of bike gear huh? That’s why I have a huge gear bag in the garage packed with all that stuff.
No wonder I make it to the gym more often
No matter the “uniform”, just the act of putting it on signals the beginning of the activity. When I’m biking, I always put my gloves on last. Once the gloves are on it’s “go time”. At the gym it’s when I start the iPod. Rituals like these help get me going...gives me a starting point. When I pull my earbuds out at the gym, that signals the end of my workout. At the end of a bike ride, when my bike specific shoes come off, that signals the end of the ride (and the beginning of putting all that gear away).
