Hello all:
I’ve wrestled with the process for establishing goals for a while. Scott’s always been pointing toward an alignment of values and goals and then on the 10 April 2007 daily boost pod cast suggested evaluating Dr. Rice’s 16 needs as a means to determine important versus non-important needs as a means to uncover values and then fitness and life goals.
Still, after attempting to classify the needs last night and then prioritize them I was only able to cluster them and then began recognizing relationships between them. What it did do for me was point me back to work I’d done with the Enneagram a few years ago following reading an article on Leadership and the Enneagram, by Mary Bast Ph.D. http://www.breakoutofthebox.com . The Enneagram is a way to access personality by recognizing your ‘motivation’; I liked the method back then because it was one of recognition and not pigeon-holing you into a type. What did I do last night? I completed an online Enneagram test with the Enneagram Institute http://www.EnneagramInstitute.com . There are some free online test inventories to access and some great information. This morning I was able to dig-in much deeper to values and recognition of self. From there, it’ll be something to assemble more accurate Life goals.
Last night I also looked around for ideas about Personality. Here’s some ideas collected along the way. Understanding our personality should allow us to identify our personal style of responding to people and tasks. The task should allow us to: gain self-understanding and self-acceptance and greater understanding and acceptance of others; identify the consequences of our interpersonal style when relating with others at home or at work; and, identify our typical reactions to pressure and learn to compensate for weak areas. As well, I thought the following interesting. Personality develops from: bio-physical factors (genetics, health); personal style (behavioural, interpersonal); traumatic experiences (negative events, positive events); social learning (parents, teachers, friends); environmental factors (school, workplace, society, culture); and sense of self-worth (self-esteem, self-concept, identity, self-acceptance, self-respect).
Working through towards and then living out Life goals seems to be what a lot of our homework needs to be about. I’d be most interested in reading your posts with regard to aligning your values toward goals and how you’ve done it and made out.
