Do you guys know that Elvis song “A Little Less Conversation a Little More Action”? I’m talking about the remix that was done a few years ago. I have that in the rotation and whenever it comes on I always pick up the pace. Especially right after the part where he says

Interesting. Thanks for that info. It would be great if they came to the North East if they do indeed tour but that is wishful thinking. I heard that RAGE is doing a reunion show in southern CA with several other artsts very soon if not just recently but Zack is not with them for the reunion. My understanding of Zack is that he’s not into the commercialization of his work and that’s why he disappeared when RAGE became so popular. He’s not a sell-out. What a typical artist! I still love his music. It’s very powerful and thought provoking.

Brandon… I like your list of music… especially RRRRRRAGE!!!! (Yes, I am a suburban, yuppie, family man who loves Rage Against the Machine! ) I just never gotten into Tool’s music… I don’t know why.

Actually, I have gotten into so much alternative rock in the past few years and that has expanded my musical horizons immensely. Based on the type of music you listen to, Brandon, I highly recommend Dinosaur, Jr… an amazing hard edge indie rock band who peaked in the 90’s. I also recommend a harder edge band called Fugazi who is more punk… but definitely more of a melodious punk band (with amazing lyrics).

Although I will listen to almost anything, my list is primarily made up of bands that would classify as rock, or subgenres thereof. But to be more specific:

Alexisonfire: “Post Hardcore Screamo” is what they are classifed as. That genre kind of bred out of Punk. Sometimes associated with Emo. Generally Alexisonfire relies on a lot of hooks, speed(especially on their new album).

Audioslave: I’m sure you’re familiar, mostly straight Hard Rock.

Chevelle: Alternative Metal/Hard Rock. Crunchy guitars, a lot of screaming(though the vocalist sings “normally” most of the time), and generally fairly heavy in general. Yet very focused on melody, which is what’s so great about them, I find.

Coheed & Cambria: My personal favorite band. They’re a Progressive Rock band with Emo elements. They kind of do a bit of everything, very unpredictable. You’ll hear Metal in there sometimes aswell. It’s one of those bands that doesn’t really fit very well into one classification.

The Cult: Most have heard of them, just a goth rock band that was big in the 80’s(recording a new album right now).

Tupelo Honey: I don’t believe they have a record deal yet, but they’re a really fantastic Rock band out of Edmonton here in Canada. Amazing vocalist.
Marianas Trench: Emo/Pop Rock/Punk style band out of Canada.

My Chemical Romance: Although they sort of disown the idea, they are considered by some as Emo. But basically they’re a Pop/Rock band. A lot of hooks on their new record, though I couldn’t speak much to their past work since I don’t own any of it.

The Used: Alternative Rock/Emo. Successful, but to it’s audience(like most emo). Most people I know either do, or would hate their work. Tool: Progressive Rock, a lot of experimentation. Super artsy. But when they do more straightfoward stuff, they’re amazing.

And I’m sure you know Rage Against the Machine. Rap/Rock, pretty evolutionary. I’m not a huge fan of their last two original works, but they have some great tracks on them. Mainly I’m a fan of their first album, which was a lot funkier and bass driven. A lot less “noise-making” by Morello, too. I think he has a tendancy to over-do it on their later work.

I saw Bad Religion live, Shawn. (Actually, I saw them when they opened for Pearl Jam in 1995.) I have never been a huge punk fan… but I do hear their stuff from time to time and it’s all right. I should give them another chance.

Brandon… you are ANALytical about music like I am!! I love progressive style rock, I should check out Coheed and Cambria. I have heard them before but would need to refamiliarize myself with them. Speaking of progressive rock… check out Silversun Pickups and Porcupine Tree. (We’ve got a vicious circle of bands being suggested, don’t we?)

Oh yes, love myself some Porcupine Tree(good for them on signing with Roadrunner). Though right now I only have In Absentia. I need Deadwing and Fear Of A Blank Planet, their last and latest albums. Obviously they have a ton of earlier work that I need to look into aswell.

Get ready for some diverse stuff with Coheed. I think their best work is probably their first album(but it’s all amazing), which is more of a focused, straightforward sound. A little less “produced”, too. Which kind of adds to the music in a different(not better, just different) way. But their second and third albums are awesome and definitely take on different styles(and mix things up a lot).

I’ll check out Silversun Pickups!

Oh yeah......Note: Those bands I refer to as being “emo"-aren’t strictly in a genre sense, but they have elements of that and sort of appeal to that whole scene. If we’re talking “real"(or straight) emotive hardcore, that’s bands like Senses Fail, Hawthorne Heights etc etc. But “emo” really isn’t very well defined as a specific genre of music. Especially not these days. So I’m loose with the term.
