Hi there,
I thought this banter on another web forum was interesting, so I’m sharing one particular posting here. Like many people on that forum, I experienced a bit of gas at first. But the benefits kept me with these fiber one bars, and now the gas is gone.
Don’t know if it’s the exercise, the eating, the water, the sleep, the fiber-one bars, or a combination of all of them… but I caught a look at myself in the mirror today, and I’m looking great! Skin is clear, glowing, and full of health. Eyes and hair, the same, look great. My bod is actually showing a much sexier curve than it has in a few years. Yay me!
Here’s the posting - would love to hear your comments.

R/e - Fiber One Bars
i love these bars, but was shocked by how much gas was produced. i already eat a high fiber diet, so i was quite surprised by how differently my body reacted to these tasty treats. so, it go me thinking.....really thinking. actually, i’ve spent most of today online researching WHAT IS THE DEAL??
here’s what i found:
1. why is chicory root extract the first ingredient? turns out that’s where the fiber is coming from AND it’s of the soluble variety. now, i eat at least 30 grams of fiber a day, but less than ten of it is soluble. so, if i’m eating a fiber one bar, where about 8 grams of it are soluble, i’m gonna get a lot more gas than if i ate 8 grams of soluble fiber spread out during the course of a whole day.
2. why’s soluble more gassy than insoluble? certain foods, like the insides of potatoes, beans, apples, and....ground chicory root(yes, they are carbs)cannot be broken down in the small intestine, thus not being absorbed and move along to the colon where the bacteria eat it(it’s the bacteria that are producing the gas from the feast). the chicory root has a specific soluble fiber called fructooligosaccharide(FOS) which simply put means short chain fructose molecules. there are “good” and “bad” bacteria and it turns out that only the “good” ones can eat FOS foods. we need the good bacteria, so by eating FOS soluble fiber(fiber one bars yeah!!!!!), we are stimulating the growth and/or activity of the good bacteria(prebiotic). YES, IT MAKES MORE GAS(because we are creating more bacteria to chomp away at our food), but think of it like our body telling us we are eating EXACTLY what we should be to promote the growth of good bacteria in our colon, which promotes our general health as well.
3. prebiotic, probiotic...pre pro what’s the diff?? prebiotics are carbs(soluble fibers) that are not absorbed in the small intestine that becomes food for good bacteria in the colon...every time we toot our horn it’s the bacteria saying,"hey, we’re here, we’re queer, and healthy for you. get used to it.” probiotics are actual bacteria that don’t get killed off on their way to their buddies in the colon. so, let’s assume we have low levels of good bacteria in our colon. we have two ways to solve this problem. we can eat foods that make the good bacteria make lots of babies(prebiotics). or, we can eat bacteria(yogurt, really expensive supplements you can by at your health food store) and hope they make it through their tough journey to the end of the line(probiotics). personally, eating prebiotics has a lot more going for it, like having other nutrients our body needs,or the fact that it forms a gel like substance that keeps our intestines in tip top shape.
yeah yeah, i know i said a lot here.
short answer: these fiber one bars are really good for you because they have the best form of soluble fiber(FOS). on average, we don’t eat enough soluble fiber and we especially don’t get enough of FOS. yes, it produces a lot of gas, mainly a problem for the first few times. but, you’re creating a better bacterial environment in your colon.
really short answer: fiber one bars taste great, are an excellent source of soluble fiber, and annoying as it may be, all that gas is actually good for you too!
