I’ve just got home from university, and im sat here writing up some work.
Before i sit down i grab a drink of water and a handful of food, whatever is in the cupboard.
We have fruit, and other stuff, but sometimes the stocks are low, which is when i binge.
How do you stop yourself snacking? What takes away your hunger?
That is a hard one to get through. I’ve noticed that I do better on binging if I can drink a tall glass of water, eat nuts or fruit and veggies. Then go for a walk, or do something else where you can’t eat (showers work too). After half an hour, the urge usually has gone and I can clearly focus on what I should eat, or not eat for my meal. I’ve also noticed if I’ve recently had a good cardio session, I don’t feel so hungry.
I’ve gotten to the point where I only have healthy food available. I don’t even buy the other stuff. I also plan for several snacks during the day. Eating small meals more frequently tends to keep the true hunger under control. Bree has some good suggestions - drinking water helps full you up. I like crunchy things so I tend to binge on fruits and veggies. Exercise also tends to disrupt the patterns that contribute to binging.
Scott always says that when you take away something, for example an eating habit, you need to replace it with something. It takes time to develop new habits that don’t include mindless eating, so don’t be frustrated. Just focus on your goals and you will get there.
When I get “snacky”....I get BUSY!! I usually try to find something to do that well, is as far away from the refrigerator as possible. I know myself, and I tend to snack when i get bored so either it is a load of laundry, chores, or a walk. or a trip outside, I occupy my mind and body with something else.
I generally don’t fight hunger. If I’m truly hungry, I’ll eat. Just make sure it’s something decent. I eat alot of carbs with meals so I try and snack on foods that have high protein and healthy fats. Tuna, sardines, nuts, cottage cheese, beef jerky, protein bars, etc.
School work makes me hungry too. So I’ll have some tea or a small snack (healthy, most usually) and then tell myself, “there you’ve had you snack, back to studying”
I’m with Kevin: if you’re genuinely hungry don’t fight it !
There is only one thing that’ll take away real hunger and thats food: your body is telling you it needs it.
Just make sure you eat something reasonably sensible. It doesn’t have to be super-healthy all the time, merely something thats not pure fat or worse, sugar (sugar will make you crave more, wereas fat at least fills you up).
Here is the trick though: do make sure to take some time to eat, so you actually have chance to take notice that you’re no longer hungry well before you’re fully stuffed .
Here’s another suggestion if you just need a “filler” , how about Bouillon? I keep both sodium free beef and chicken bouillon in my desk at work and also at home- It makes me feel like I’m filling up without the calories and etc
Here in the US bouillon is beef, chicken or vegetable flavored cubes or granules that are added to boiling water to make a hot beverage. It can have a very high salt content. It is also used to flavor soup, stews, sauces etc....
UK equivalent? Bovril? OXO cubes sounds the most like our bouillon cubes.

Oops- Sorry, I “assumed” bouillion was in general use, and yes, it can be very high in sodium. I have high blood pressure, so it’s not an option, I use Sodium Free. I tell people it’s like soup without the noodles
I agree with Kevin in that when you are hungry your body is telling you it needs fuel. The key for you is to choose the right fuel. Since I eat six times a day, I don’t usually find myself wanting to snack much, unless I’m up late. That’s when the urge to forage through the fridge and pantry hits. Most of the time I’ll grab a small salad and the urge will go away. A trick that I learned that works well is to get a glass of warm water. It settle the stomach down, and the “desire” to snack leaves. This works great when I get hungry and only have an hour until my next meal.
