Other than Mrs. Dash, does anyone know of a good replacement for salt in soups and other recipes. This is for my grandma, who is going through massive salt mourning.

Thanks,
Bree

I’m not a big salt guy(my mom practically forces it onto my plate) and I haven’t done much searching for any substitute but........k I got nothing. I think there’s something called “No Salt”, by my mom says it’s horrendous. One could balance it out with increased potassium intake.

I’ll bring that up to her. She’s got diabeties, conjestive heart failure, is way over weight and has been forever, and she’s not very mobile. But she’s stubborn and wants her salt. Luckily she wants to stay out of the hospital worse, so she’s home miserable. And my mom takes care of her, so she’s also miserable. I’m trying to find a doable solution. But I don’t like salt, so I’m no help.

Sea salt is supposed to have less sodium than regular salt.  That might be a start.

The other big thing you can do to avoid salt is check the contents whenever you use processed foods.  They have huge amounts of sodium without the salt taste.  If you cut back on the sodium intake there, you could use a little salt when you really want the flavor.  The more salt you use, the more you adapt to it so you need more and more to appreciate the taste.

I have actually heard if you add wine into your food it will decrase your craving for salt.Paula it’s intersting you say that about proccessed food, I have gone from eating everything out of a bag or can to prepairing it all myself, I have noticed an increased craving for salt.

I try to use fresh herbs so there is heaps of flavour and the lack of salt isn’t noticed.
