I had been a gym user on and off for 2 years.  And recently, I found myself without time to exercise.  ( I know excuses, excuses)

So recently I’ve been looking into home gyms.  I’ve always wanted a Bowflex, but never seriously considered one because of the arm and leg pricing.  Yesterday I saw that Amazon.com Had the Bowflex Conquest w/ Mat for $500 shipped (so only an arm).  After sleeping on it for a night and going to my local Sports Authority store to try the machine, I decided to pull the trigger.

This is the machine I decided to get:

Just wanted to get everyone’s input on Bowflex: the good, the bad, and the ugly.

The Bowflex is excellent under one condition, that being you use it.
It’s easy to buy great equipment, the hard part is putting in the work it takes to see the results you’re expecting, but I have faith you’ll figure that one out for yourself! grin Have fun and keep burning!

I heard the installation by itself is 3-4 hour of work.  So, at least I’ll get a workout that way.

I just bought a Golds Gym Power Series Tower (pull up, abs & dip station) and the salesmen convinced me it would only take 45 minutes to assemble if I took my time. Well let me tell you, after 2 trips back to the store for the correct parts that were not in the box I certainly took my time - it took SIX HOURS....

but now I can do pull-ups without ruining the doorframe. WOO HOO!

BTW - we had a Bowflex at our dojo and I really did love it. The feeling is alot different than a standard weight/plate machine. It gets harder the more you pull! Enjoy it man.

I had one.  Bowflex Ultimate.  It definintely served it’s purpose.

I eventually outgrew it and switched to freeweights & machines at the gym.

But like tinkoff said, use it and you’ll see the benfits. smile

Update: I just got the machine in today.  I have to say, it looks much bigger in person than it does on TV, installation took about 2 hours.  Excellent fit and finish.  But is missing a screw and 5 washers will need to call bowflex to have them send me those.  I have a theory that they purposely do this to get you in their customer database.

Yeah. I know what you mean.  Hopefully I won’t need these:

Hey Jim, how about an update? Now that you have the machine, could you tell us your impressions and if you think it’s a good purchase? I’m thinking about getting one as well, and would be interested in your feedback.

Okay, here’s a brief update.  I will come back and do more extensive ones after.

Since getting the Bowflex, life has gotten the way of consistent exercise routine, so has laziness.  But with some effort and a little support, I’m back on track.

The first month after getting the machine, I only exercised an average of once a week for 50 minutes each.

Starting with a quick 5 minute rowing exercise and do a basic workout, one exercise per major muscle group, 3 sets of 10-12 per exercise.  After a couple of weeks of being very sore… At first, I was a little discouraged, but I remember that this will happen whenever I stop working out for extended period of time and start again.  Simple solution to avoiding this soreness is to not stop. =P

The second month and on, I was back on the exercise routine again.  My best friend now works out with me on the machine.  I am working out 2-3 times a week for a hour at a time.  And playing tennis a couple times a week for 2 hours at a time for cardio.
I have gained 6 lb of muscle mass.  I look much better in the mirror, my arms are a little thicker, I can’t see the ribs on my chest any more =] Seeing results gets me really motivated to work out more often.

The power rods feels very different from free weights, and even the pully and cable machines you see at the gym.  The resistance starts out low, and builds up as you bend the rod.  One of the major concerns for me when it comes to working out is safety.  I had hurt my shoulder working out with free weights before (a friend told a joke while I was working out, I laughed =/ ) The bowflex if very safe to work out with if you keep to the proper forms.  It is also more effective than I thought.  With the bowflex I get to my muscle’s “point of failure” a lot quicker.

Overall, I think it is a great purchase if you would workout at least twice a week on the machine.  The travel time I saved for not having to drive to and from the gym is often enough to do my entire exercise routine on the Bowflex.

On local news paper ads and craigslist listings, one can probably find a good deal on almost new Bowflex machines.  I’d highly recommend the machine to any commited individuals.  For me the machine has paid for itself already in saved money and time.

Thanks for the update Jim! Sounds like you really like it. I’ve looked around online and haven’t found anyone who had anything bad to say about it, except the price of course. big surprise
