For us Jews, the holidays start in September!

The Jewish new year (Rosh Hashana) starts tonight, officially kicking off the holiday season.

For myself, I’ve got a family dinner tonight and tomorrow and another one next Thursday for Yom Kippur (after the fasting, of course!). The week after that, October 13th, is Canadian Thanksgiving. From there, it’s only two weeks until Halloween and all the craziness *that* involves! And then, of course, it’s November and the “start” of the holiday season. Whew!

So, first, a great big “Happy new year!” to everyone! May you be written in the book of life!

Second, for those of us who are facing a 3+ months-long holiday season: stay smart! Eat well in between those family dinners and keep exercising as much as possible. I fully intend to enjoy all the great home cookin’, but I *don’t* want to gain any weight by January. It’s all a matter of balance.

Finally, for those of you who have still got a month or two before your holidays start: now’s the time to get ready! Put in a few extra workouts, drop those extra few pounds you’ve been holding on to, and *plan!* You know they’re coming, so don’t be caught flat-footed!

Cheers,
Julie

It’s my birthday, and I’m obnoxiously happy!

Today is my birthday, woohoo! I’ve been running around the house singing it, I called my mom and quite obnoxiously sang out, “It’s my birthdaaaaaaaay!” I’ve been having a blast, and I intend to spend the rest of the day like this. We get one a year, celebrate life (your life) as fully as you can imagine. Who can’t smile at an “adult” being this happy about a birthday?

This morning I did yoga, happy this body will move so beautifully (I can say this as there were no witnesses ), after work I’m going to go for a run and celebrate where my body can take me. I do really like who I am, and how I look, so today is a complete celebration of that.

It’s OK, almost necessary for all of us to love ourselves and celebrate the joy of living.

Off to work to annoy a room full of 4 year olds! Too bad I couldn’t bring cupcakes.

Potluck coming up? Any suggestions?

I thought I’d post this before I crawl off to bed. Sunday after next, I have a potluck with my Quaker Meeting. I always enjoy making something, but the last 2-3 events, I’ve made the same exact thing, my marinated vegetables. While they’re enjoyed, and they give me something I can really load up on and keep my hand off the potato salad serving utensil, I want to break out a little. Something a bit unusual, healthy, low-calorie, preferably vegetarian so everyone can have it, and hopefully easy to transport. Any ideas?

Thanks,

Ann

Easter! Passover! Let have some tips!

Wow, it feels like the holiday season was just yesterday, and we’re already approaching the next set! While some of the tips might be the same, Easter and Passover definitely have their own sets of challenges.

So, what are you best tips for getting through Easter dinner or Passover seder? If we start thinking about it now, we’ll definitely be ready when the time comes!

BTW - my best tip for getting through seder is to have a small, healthy snack before seder starts. Otherwise, I get so hungry during the first half of seder (before the meal) that I eat *way* too much when the food is served.

Cheers,

Hi everyone,

It’s the holidays, and that means people are going to be taking lots of pictures, right? I was at an artisan exhibition yesterday, and my aunt bought me a really sexy red shirt as an early Hannukah present. I thought I’d share a picture of me wearing it. (Full body shot—woot!)

If you’ve got ‘em, share your pictures, too!

Cheers,
Share Your Success: What Worked for Thanksgiving Dinner?

The best thing that I did for Thanksgiving dinner was to limit the number of side dishes and desserts. By having only a few choices, I didn’t get overly full by trying a “little” of everything. The second best thing was cooking a smaller portion of everything so as not to have left overs.

Wanted: Your post-Thanksgiving status report

Hi everyone,

Thanksgiving is past, but the holidays are just getting underway. So… how are you doing? Have you stumbled a bit, or are you right on track?

Now, while it’s still early, is the time to sit down for five minutes (maybe even, *gasp*, get on a scale) and do a fast status-check. I realized yesterday that my weight had gone above the limit I set for it. Oh noes! The good news was that I caught it early and, two days (and a few walks) later, I’m right where I should be. I’m so happy that I’m keeping an ongoing status check, so that I can catch little problems before they’re big problems. My lack-of-stress levels are pretty good, I’m feeling great, and I’m ready to keep zooming.

So… how about you?

Cheers,
Julie
